Ministry Information Sheet

Adopt-a-Family

1. Description of Ministry

For Christians, the season of Advent is one of waiting, preparation and hope. We wait for the coming of the Lord. We prepare through prayer and sacrifice. And we hope to share in God’s glory and grace. Families also wait and hope and prepare for Christmas on another level, too, by shopping for presents and giving them to special individuals in their lives. Unfortunately, because of illness, disability or financial hardship, many people in our area find it hard to hope. We, at St. John’s, can do something to help. The Adopt-A-Family program gives us the opportunity to restore their hope and help these families enjoy their Christmas season.

Last year, 64 families were screened and referred by area organizations, such as the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Nether Providence Elementary School, the Hispanic Ministry, The Bernardine Center and CityTeam Ministries.

Who adopts the families? 71 donors contributed last year. Many were individuals or families from the parish. Some were larger groups, such as St. John’s faculty, the Faithful Band, CCD classes and faith-sharing groups.

How much do you spend? That’s entirely up to the donors. All we ask is that all of the children, in each family, are treated equally.

2. Frequency/Schedule of Meetings/Activities
We prepare and deliver the gifts once per year, in the beginning of December. Parisioners drop off the gifts at the Stevenson Center. Our members then distribute them to families, or referral organizations.
3. Where do I perform service?
In the local community. First at St. John's, then delivering the gifts to the targeted recipients.
4. Who are served?
  The entire community.
5. Preparation
  None
